Diego López: "We're going for the win at the Santiago Bernabéu"
The Valencia CF forward spoke to the media in a press conference
On May 21st, 1919, Valencia FC played the first game of what would become a legacy lasting over 100 years. The match took place against Gimnástico FC in Castellon, in a tournament organised by the La Plana town council.
In the end, Valencian regional champions Gimnástico took a 1-0 win. The first starting lineup for Valencia CF, with the 2-3-5 formation popular at the time, consisted of José Marco, Amador Peris, Julio Gascó, Fernando Marzal, Ferré, Pepe Llobet, Luis Fernández, Miguel Umbert, Martínez Ibarra, Salvador Aliaga and Gómez Juaneda.
Over the course of the next century, the club would change name to Valencia CF and win LaLiga six times (2004, 2002, 1971, 1947, 1944 and 1942), the Copa del Rey eight times (2019, 2008, 1999, 1979, 1967, 1954, 1949 and 1941), three UEFA Cups (2004, 1963 and 1962), two European Supercups (2004 y 1980), one European Cup Winners Cup (1980) and the Spanish Supercopa (1999).
